Research behind this
Aspartame, methyleugenol, and isoeugenol — IARC Monographs evaluation
Classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B) based on limited evidence for liver cancer.
Evaluation of certain food additives: ninety-sixth report of JECFA (aspartame)
Reviewed the same evidence as IARC and reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake of 40 mg/kg bw/day — no change recommended.
Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of 4-methylimidazole in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice
Found lung tumours in mice exposed to 4-MEI, a by-product of some caramel colours. Basis for California's Proposition 65 warning level.
Cleaner alternatives
This product is rated Moderate. Rated Moderate because all five additives are approved in every major market, but aspartame (E951) carries an active conflict between IARC's 2023 hazard classification and JECFA's unchanged intake assessment, and caramel IV and phosphoric acid both carry intake cautions for heavy consumers.
